Our Retreat

On April 10, 2012, United States Army Staff Sergeant Travis Mills of the 82nd Airborne was critically injured on his third tour of duty in Afghanistan by an IED improvised explosive device while on patrol, losing portions of both legs and both arms. He is one of only five quadruple amputees from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to survive his injuries. Thanks to his amazing strength, courage, an incredible will to live, the heroic actions of the men in his unit, the prayers of thousands, and all the healthcare providers Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. In 2013, Travis and his wife Kelsey founded the Travis Mills Foundation. They were so overwhelmed with the help they received from around the nation as well as non-profits they wanted to give back too! What started with an idea to send care packages over seas, soon turned into a much larger idea of hosting a retreat in the state of Maine for combat injured vets and their families to come for a week of rest, relaxation and recovery with their family. Travis and Kelsey hosted two proof of concept weeks in 2013 and 2014 finally deciding to purchase their own property in 2015. The former Elizabeth Arden Estate, built in 1929, had fallen into ruins, Travis, Kelsey decided this would be the home of their future retreat and bought the property. In 2017 after massive renovations they opened the doors in June! In their first year they hosted 84 combat injured veterans and their families at their fully accessible retreat in Rome Maine.
